National AAPI Health Summit: Hepatitis B Track

September 14-16, 2006

The health summit, hosted by the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum, brought together health consumers and researchers, public health and healthcare professionals, and policy makers to contribute to the national agenda for Asian American and Pacific Islander health for the next 20 years.

The Asian Liver Center helped to organize the hepatitis B track which, for the first time, was included as one of the major health issues facing Asian and Pacific Islanders today. The intent of the track was to increase awareness about the threat of chronic hepatitis B and liver cancer in the rapidly growing AAPI community, the recent CDC initiatives, the scientific basis for HBV treatment, and to identify and prioritize the goals and strategies for a national chronic HBV and liver cancer control plan. The theme was "Unite Against HBV."

Workshop #3: Identifying Aims, Goals, Gaps, and Priorities for a National Strategy

In this interactive session participants brainstormed and voted for their top 3 in each category. The PowerPoint [0.08 MB] summarizes the discussion and reveals what the participants deemed to be the top issues.

Workshop #4: Building Support and Legislation at City, State, and National Levels

Congressman Mike Honda (CA-15) and San Francisco City Supervisor Fiona Ma spoke about their work to fight hepatitis B and fielded questions from the audience about how the API community can motivate their legislators to support hepatitis B initiatives.
